Friday 6 August 1880 Richie came down from Caerynwch this morning at 8:45, and drove over with me to Tyn y groes. I began fishing at Gethi Gemlyn [sic. Gelli Gemlyn] and the river was in fair fly order, but rather thick, and the sudden rise about midday spoilt the fishing, and about 1.30 a steady downpour of rain came on and continued nearly all day. Richie left me at the Meeting of the Waters, and I went up to the Falls with Hugh Jones, but as soon as we got up to the top pool, a heavy flood came down. I eventually returned to the Meeting of the Waters and fished up with worm. I caught two sewin. Mawddach. Sewin 3 (1) 1 1/2 pounds I got a good many trout with a worm. Number not kept.

Saturday 7 August [1880]. I went out to the river at 8:45. John Ellis with me. Began fishing above Tyn y groes and rose a salmon three times in Dolgoed pool.: But he missed the fly each time. I was much disappointed in not hooking the fish. I fished up to the Meeting of the Waters, and rose several sewin, but they came very shyly at the fly. I caught a small one at the Long flat, and then as rain was coming down in one continuous downpour, I determined to go down to Gethi Gemlyn [Gelli Gemlyn] and await the flood. I tried the pool above and captured a nice sewin of 2 1/2lbs, and hooked and lost a small one at Gethi Gemlyn. I then retreated into the farm for lunch, and when I returned to the river it was in raging flood, and it soon became quite unfishable. I lingered about up to the Meeting of the Waters in the hopes that it would fall, but it did so very slowly, and was a white milky mud colour. The wind, after a sharp thunderstorm, veered round to the NE and it continued showery and turned much colder I never saw the Mawddach so high before; the water was splashing over Bryncemlyn Bridge. The Wnion rose a great height and a great many fields were under water. Drove drove home this evening: the trap coming to fetch me.

[Parhad o gofnod 7 Awst 1880: Mawddach Sewin 3 (1 )2 1/2lbs. Sewin {cyfanswm?} Sewin 49]. Monday, 9 August [1880] I drove over to Tyn y groes and went to Eden first, but the river was low: and as the sun came out very strongly during the day, it was very little good fishing. I tried up to Larch tree pool, and then went to the Mawddach and tried up to the Falls, but to no purpose, so I returned to the Meeting of the Waters and waited quietly till the sun went off the water. As soon as I began I hooked and lost a good sewin in the rocks below the Meeting of the Waters, and go [sic] after to Gethi gemlyn [sic Gelli gemlyn]. I rose two or three very good fish and caught one. I fished below to Dolgloeuw [sic] where the trap met me, and I drove home late, not getting in till nearly tea. Mawddach. Sea trout 1 1lb

Tuesday, 10 August [1880] Went out on the Wnion with small flies early this morning and fished from Dolserau Issa [sic] to Dolgun. I caught one sewin at the Pool in the Hollow and lost one in the pool below. This morning at 10.30 I rode down and attended a Petty Sessions. Came back to lunch, and afterwards went up to Llyn Cynwch to try for Perch but I did not stay long as I was anxious to meet Heatley Noble who came from Park Place to shoot with me. He arrived alright by the 6 o`clock train. Weather very fine and warm. Wnion & Llyn Cynwch Sea trout 1 1lb 4 oz Perch 4

Tuesday, 5 October [1880]. It rained very heavily during the night, and was raining this morning with a very cold Easterly wind blowing, so cold that snow is lying thickly both on Arran and Cader. We made an early start to the Mawddach, and went up to Pen y Bont, and found the Eden just a nice height and colour , But not a fish could we move. From there we went up the Mawddach to the Falls, but the river was too dirty for fly until quite late in the evening. I tried worm at the top pool below the Falls, and hooked a good fish, but whether it was a large Sewin or salmon I could not tell. I caught two Sewin, one of about 2lbs. I tried a fly later in the evening, and rose a fish at the tail of the Rock pool: the water was then much discoloured but the river began to fall fast. We were very late home, and got caught in the dark, so that Frank had to lead the pony in from Dolgun gate. Sea trout (Mawddach) 2

Wednesday 6th October 1880 Frank and I went to the Mawddach again, and found it in nice fly order, but the weather was dull and cold with more rain threatening. We began again up the Mawddach and fished steadily to the Falls, and I believe I rose a nice grilse twice in the first long pool in the wood. It looked a good fish. I caught 3 sewin with fly, but met no other fish: there was no rise on them at all. We went to the Meeting of the Waters eventually, and there found all the Mr Lee fishing, but he had no sport. We went below Tyn y groes and fished Gethi gemlyn [sic. Gelligemlyn?]. No result at all: it was a disappointing day. Sea trout (Mawddach) 3

Thursday, October 28, 1880 Very cold stormy and showery. I made an early start to the Mawddach, and of course found it very high. I went to the upper water and was in hopes the river would fall into fly order, but the Mawddach was dirty all day and fell very little, so I was obliged to fish with worm. I was broken in a good fish [sic] I think and I caught one sewin. As the Mawddach was hopeless for fly, this afternoon I went to the Eden, and found it in good order. I rose and pricked a nice fish in the second pool below Dolgyfeiliau. I went up to Craigwyn: but did not move a fish there. Mawddach. Sewin 1. about 2lbs.

Friday, October 29, 1880 Again went over to the Mawddach. A good deal of snow had fallen on the mountains during the night, but today the weather was settled, but cold. I began fishing at the junction pool, and tried steadily up the Mawddach which was in splendid order for fly all day, tho` high and fell very [tanlinellwyd] slowly indeed. I did not meet a fish till I came to the first long pool in the wood. At the tail end of the pool I rose a good fish twice, but he came shyly to the fly so I left him for the present. My next fish was a magnificent salmon, which rolled right over my fly, in the first pool below the Falls. I tried him again with the same fly a d-hooked Jock O`scotts, and again he came out at it. I gave the fish a long rest, and then tried him a third time, and again he rose at the fly. I determined not to change my fly, and the fourth time he came up and was pricked, and of course all was over after that. I hooked a smaller fish, I think a grilse in the same pool afterwards. Returning to the first long pool in the wood I rose my [sic. first?] fish of the morning again, and scratched him. I caught a nice sewin, and then home: weather turning fine and frosty. Mawddach. Sewin 1 about 1 1/2lbs.

Tuesday, July 19 The rain of yesterday, and showers during the night put fresh water in the river, and I gave the on the [Wnion?] a try during the morning before breakfast but with no success. We started down to the Mawddach soon after 10, & found the river in fair order; I began above Dolglocarthau [sic] , while Wyn and Peter went up to Tyn y groes to fish up. I fished very fine [sic], and at the run hooked a Sewin and lost it; at the Poachers Rock I was luckier, killing two sewin – one of which was a good one 2lb 2oz. At the tail end of Gethigemlyn [sic Gelligemlyn] I stuck in a small grilse of 4lb: and also caught a small sewin. I killed the grilse on a peculiar fly wing. Peacock`s heel gold body hackle hackle peacock heel [sic]. I had bad luck after this as I lost two sewin, and hooked a good fish (foul) [sic] in Llyn Goch [sic] – at the tail end of the pool. I did not meet another fish up Tyn y groes, and I went up to the Tun to get some lunch, and heard that Wynne had gone up, so I walked up to the Meeting of the Waters and began to fish down: soon after which Wynne and Peter met me, as they had had been the Eden. Wynne had been interfered with by a man fishing in front of him, nevertheless he had hooked two or three sewin; but had only one fish of about 1lb which is caught up the Eden. We fished down to Tyn y groes, and excepting the fish which Wynne rose in the run below the long flat, saw nothing. We drove home with Mother and Nelly, been to Dolmelynllyn. Monday, July 25, [1881] I had returned home on Saturday from Shrewsbury. Wynne and I determined to give the Mawddach another try on the strength of yesterday`s showers, and we found the river in fair order. Wynne and I began fishing above [tanlinellwyd] Dolgloelogna [???!!! Sic] and fished up, "Peter" driving the trap to Dolmelynllyn where we put it up. There was no rise on the sewin, and I did not hook a fish till I got to the Rocks where I lost a sewin of 2 lbs or so, and in the shallows above, I caught a fish of about 1 1/2 lbs. Wynne was no luckier as he only had a small sewin. After lunch we did not know what to do, but eventually ended in my going right up to Tyddyn y Gladys, and I tried down without success. Wynne tried among the rocks below Bryn Cemlyn, and lost a sewin with worm. We met at six at Dolmelynllyn, and were home in good time. Mawddach. Seatrout 2 (1) 1 1/2 lbs

Tuesday, July 26 [1881] Showery weather. I went up the Wnion today with small flies, and began at Llyn y foutin [sic], and fished up. I had no luck until I got above Llyn Goch [sic], just above which, in the shallows, I hooked a good sewin and after a good fight I landed it in the big pool. I caught it on the Soldier Palmer. No other incident occurred, and I fished up to Bont Llyn Rhaeadr. I started out without lunch, thinking I should return, but Roberts the stationmaster, very kindly brought it up to me. I caught some good trout, particularly between the big pool and Bont Newydd: but sewin seemed few and far between. Wyn did not fish today, Lewis Self and his wife came to stay here today. Wnion. ME caught 1 sewin 2lb 2 oz and 25 trout

Friday, July 29, [1881 ] Cold but fine. Wind NW. Went over to the Mawddach with Davies of Auchyfoyle [sic Allt y Foel?]: and found the river in good order for fly. I commenced fishing at Gethigemlyn [sic], and caught one sewin at the tail end: crossing to the Poachers Rock Pool, I tried it carefully and just under the rock I rose a nice salmon to the "Mystery", the fish coming at the fly as soon as it touched the water, nothing would induce him to come again. Davies saw this fish jump before I rose him. Above Gethigemlyn I met four rods, Willie Griffiths, the Colonel and two others, so I tried the Long Hat (which was too low) caught one sewin here, and had lunch. After which I stepped it up to Tyddyn y gladys and commenced in the pool, but did not meet a fish till I came to the Rock pool, at the tail end of which I rose a salmon twice to double h Durham Ranger: [tanlinellwyd]: unfortunately I got caught in a branch under water at my third attempt and in disengaging the fly, must have moved my fish, as he would not come again. I fished right up to the Falls without meeting another Fish, and was not home till late. This was a hard, but unfortunate days fishing, as a might! have done well. Mawddach Sea trout 2. Rose salmon.

Saturday, July 30, 1881 Fine day – though becoming unsettled towards evening, and I heard thunder. I determined to go over again to the Mawddach so I started after 9.30 breakfast to walk, and I began fishing among the Bryncemlyn rocks, and of course the river was low. I tried small flies, and did rise two sewin, and I found it very little use. I went down as far as Gethi-gemlyn [sic], and as high up as the Meeting of the Waters. I watched for some time the fish trying to jump the fall at Cornelius` pool, and here the river watcher joined me. I walked home, the rain coming on just as I got in.

Tuesday, August 2 I got up at 6:30, and tried the Wnion with small flies for sewin, but did not meet one. In to breakfast at 9.30, after which I went up to Llyn Cynwch, as the day promised to be fine, but a strong and gusty wind got up, which quite spoilt perch fishing, so this afternoon I came down to the river, and tried from the Ford pool up to Dolgarnedd wood, and only hooked one small sewin.

Wednesday, August 3 It was a rough night, a strong SW gale blowing with a good deal of rain, and it continued drizzling and misty all day. I started over to the Mawddach with Davies at 9 - and found the river in flood, but just falling. I began at Gethigemlyn [sic] with worm, and did nothing in the pool; the water was not high enough, but in the run above I caught two sewin which I was able to send home immediately as I sent the trap home with Edward, intending to stay the night at Tyn y groes. I crossed over Bryncemlyn bridge and went down to Llyn Goch [sic], but now the river was getting much too light for worm, but did not fall much, if at all [tanlinellwyd did>fall]. I caught two sewin here, and one above – not very large, and then had lunch, after which we walked up to the Meeting of the Waters, where I discovered Birkett had already been. I killed a nice sewin here, but could do nothing at the stepping stones, and Birkett afterwards told me he caught a fish over 3 pounds here. I now walked right up to the First Long Pool in the wood and tried with fly up to the Falls, but barring a large sewin which I caught on a big Durham Ranger I did not meet a fish. The river was very high. I fished till seven, and walked back to Tyn y groes. I dined this evening with Birkett and his wife. Sewin (Mawddach) 7 (1) 3 1/2lbs (2) 1 1/2 lbs (1) 1lb six with worm: one with fly.

Thursday, August 4 Burkett and I breakfasted at 7:30: and soon after eight I went to the Eden, which I found in splendid order for fly. I caught a sewin immediately at the Pen y Bont Pool, and did well with sewin for the first two hours or so, killing five, but I was unfortunate in rising a salmon at the Mill Pool; the fish only making one offer and that a very shy one. I went up to Craigwryn [?] Pool, and only rose a sewin here, and was not more fortunate in the holes below. Though I rose a good sewin, I then left the Eden and walked up to Tyddyn y Gladys [sic], and fished up, but met FW Godsal fishing. He had done nothing at all. I went up to the Falls, not a fish stirring, and I fished very hard, and tried all sorts of flies. Meeting Godsall again at the Bridge, and also Massey Taylor, who is with him, we walked back to Tyn y groes together, and I gave them a lift to Hengwrt. Saturday, August 6, 1881 As a good deal of rain fell yesterday afternoon, I went over to the Mawddach, driving as far as Dolgarthan, and sending the trap home. The river was rather low, but a good colour. I did not raise a sewin until I came to Gethigemlyn [sic. Gelligemlyn], at the tail end of which I met a fish, in the run above I got a small sewin, & I was then going on to try the Bryn Cemlyn rocks, when I met four boys and a man fishing down, so I walked straightway to Cornelius` and had my lunch at that pool, and then commenced fishing just above. I fished mostly upstream and in one of the first holes I hooked a nice fish which turned out to be a small Grilse of 2 3/4 lbs. It was rough work fishing through the wood, and the midges and flies were awful. I caught another sewin about 1lb and lost enough [sic. another?] . I walked up to the first long pool in the wood, to try the top of that, and then started homewards about 4.30 a long walk, but which I accomplished in less than 2 hours. sewin (Mawddach) 2 (1) 1lb. Sunday, August 7 A threatening looking morning.... Monday, August 8 Rain fell heavily during the night: and I got up about six o`clock and went out for an hour on the Wnion, and with fly caught two small sewin at the Ford Pool. I rose one at the crooked pool and one at the pool in the hollow, in to breakfast at 8 o`clock, and then Davies and I started over to Mawddach driving up to Pen y Bont and Davies took the trap back to Dolmelynllyn. At Cornelius` pool I caught a nice sewin of 1 3/4 pounds: and then went up Eden; I did not meet a good fish till I got up to [Craigwryn], halfway down which pool I saw a boil at my fly, which was no doubt a big fish. I rose him to thunder and lightning, and then tried him with Durham Ranger, but he would not come again, so I had lunch it now being 1 o`clock and I cast over the fish afterwards, but he would not move. I continued fishing to the end of the pool, and at the very end just as I was making my last cast, I stuck in a good fish, which gave me a bit of running about, as he did his best to leave the pool, but I coaxed him up and just as I got him in a good position, the fish came away, and I lost him – a fish about 9lbs. I caught three sewin in Eden, one of 2lbs – and then about 4.30 I crossed to Mawddach, and tried steadily up from Tyddyn y Gladys, but could not meet a fish, so I went up to the top pools and as the river was pretty high, I put on a good size double hooked "Jock Scots" which had the desired effect, as in the Minor`s pool, I stuck in a good fish, which I landed after a short tussle: he was very long and much below weight, having been in trouble before, apparently last year as there was a hole where the hook had been in the upper jaw. I tried the top pool and at the tail end of it hooked a fine salmon which rushed up to the head of the pool, made one plunge and was off. I had a long walk back, and we did not get home till 8.45 . Mawddach: Salmon 1 9lbs double hooked Jock Scots. Sea trout (1) 1 3/4 pounds. Eden: Sea trout 3 (1) 2lbs Six sewin Wnion: Sea trout 2

Tuesday, August 9 [1881]. I got up before six, and went out on the Wnion, and it was in capital order for fly. I went up to the big pool, but did not hook a fish until I came to the pool opposite Pugh`s farm, here I lost a good sewin. I fished down to the pool in the hollow, at the tail end of which I hooked a fine fish, which after some trouble I landed; it was exactly 3 pounds. I went to the Petty Sessions this morning and did not get away till 1.30: but I had my fishing things ready and Richie met me on the in the Tunn, and he I Davies went over in the car. We had our lunch on the way to save time, and we drove up to Pen y Bont as I went to the upper part of the river, as the lower part was being well fished, I commenced at Eden bridge pool and caught a small sewin here, and at Cornelius` got to sewin and rose a grilse twice and hooked him, and he gave me good sport, and I gaffed him myself: he was fresh-run, and a very pretty fish. I tried up to the Falls but did not rise of fish of any sort . We were home late. Wnion Sea trout 1. 3lbs `Pool in the Hollow`. Eden. Sea trout 1 Mawddach. Wednesday, August 10, [1881]. Still more rain. I rose early, and went out on Wnion before breakfast but only caught a small sewin. Richie came down at 11, as I was anxious to give him a lesson with the gun, and we took a walk after rabbits, but such pouring rain came on we found none out. After lunch went out on Wnion and fished up to Bont Newydd: the river had risen an inch or so, I caught two sewin – one at the top of Llyn Goch [sic] with worm: a nice fish, the other – small with fly. Sea trout (Wnion) 3 (1) 1 3/4 lbs.

Wednesday, August 24 I went home today by the 12.10 train. After lunch went to the Wnion with Fred Robinson; the river was in good order for small flies. Robinson fished down from the crooked pool, while I fished up from the Ford Pool, and I went up to the Helygog pools where I rose two sewin caught one: I also caught a sewin at the Rock opposite Pugh`s Farm. Robinson did nothing. I had several brown trout which I did not count. I lost one sewin at the Ford and one in the Helygog pools but none were large fish. Wnion - Seatrout 2. CME.

Thursday, August 25 It rained heavily from about six o`clock, and continued without intermission all day with heavy squalls from The SW: and it was one of the roughest days I ever remember. Fred Robinson and I started over to Tyn-y-groes about 9 o`clock, and as the river had not come down I went up towards the falls, but when I reached Pen y Bont the Eden was in flood, so I walked up to the wooden bridge and the soon as I got here the Mawddch came down in high and dirty flood. It was too high to fish above so I walked down and met Robinson, who had Davies with him, and off we went to get a Gethigemlyn, and here I began picking up some nice sewin. I ought to mention that Davies killed a nice fish of about 2 1/2 pounds with worm in Tyn-y-groes pool, and lost another. Fred Robinson did not manage the worm well, and I caught 13 out of the 16 . I did well at Llyn Goch [sic] and the rocks above in the evening, the river gradually rising again. Wet and cold (though I changed my stockings and knickerbockers) we started home about 6, and I was seized with a severe attack of spasms and felt very upset on way home: the result of a chill. Sea trout (Mawddach) 16 [tanlinellwyd 16]. Largest 2 1/2 pounds. Brown trout 9. Eels 2. [Horn.Lus???] 2

Tuesday, August 30 Wet and showery during the night. I was much better today, and was able to take my rod out on the Wnion, which was high but in good order for fly. Fred Robinson and the Squire accompanied me during the morning, but in the afternoon I went right up to the Helygog pools: but had no sport at all. Kinsey killed one small sewin.
